How to Install Sliding Doors: A Step-by-Step Guide

Sliding doors are a functional addition to any home, perfect for saving space and creating an elegant transition between rooms. See materials needed -

Tools & Materials You’ll Need;

  • Sliding door kit (doors, tracks, hardware)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Stud finder 
  • Wrench
  • Saw (if adjustments are needed)

Step 1: Measure the Opening

Before starting, measure the width and height of the door opening. Make sure you have the correct door size. There should be at least 1 inch of clearance above the door for the track system to work.

Step 2: Install the Track

  1. Use a pencil to mark the position and a level to make sure it is perfectly straight.
  2. Use the drill to secure the top track with screws into the wall studs or solid backing.
  3. Check the track is even – an uneven track will cause the doors to slide poorly and cause issues.

Step 3: Attach the Rollers to the Door

  1. Ensure you Fix the rollers or brackets to the top of each sliding door using the tools provided in the list above.
  2. The Screws must be tightened with a wrench or screwdriver to make sure the rollers are solidly in place.

Step 4: Hang the Sliding Door

  1. Lift the door carefully and hook the rollers onto the top track.
  2. Slowly slide the door back and forth so it moves smoothly.
  3. If needed adjust the rollers if to level the door and fix any alignment issues.

Step 5: Install the Bottom Guide

  1. Place the bottom guide on the floor to keep the door from swinging outward.
  2. Check and mark its position, drill test holes, and screw it into place.
  3. Retest the door to see if it glides with no issues.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  • Finally you can add handles or hardware kits, follow instructions for that.
  • Clean up all details and you are good to go.
  • Test the door several times to make sure it opens and closes smoothly.
