How to Replace a Door Lock Quick and Easy

1. Gather Your Tools and Materials
Check You have the below:

  • A new door lock (ensure it’s the correct type and size)
  • A screwdriver (flathead or Phillips, depending on screws)
  • A measuring tape
  • Optional: a chisel and hammer (If adjustments are needed)

2. Remove the Old Door Lock

  • Unscrew the Doorknob or Lever: Locate and unscrew the screws on the interior side of the door handle.
  • Take Out the Latch Mechanism: Remove the screws on the edge of the door where the latch is located, then gently slide the latch out.
  • Remove the Strike Plate: Unscrew the plate on the door frame that catches the latch.

3. Install the New Latch

  • Insert the new latch mechanism into the hole on the edge of the door. Make sure the latch bolt faces the correct direction (the beveled edge should face the door frame).
  • Secure the latch in place with screws.

4. Attach the Lock and Handle for fitting

  • Line up the exterior and interior parts of the new lockset through the holes in the door.
  • Insert the connecting spindle (the bar that connects both handles).
  • Make sure to tighten the screws to hold the handle and lock in place. Ensure the handles operate smoothly before fully tightening.

5. Install the Strike Plate

  • Replace the old strike plate on the door frame with the new one included in your lockset. Screw it securely in place, ensuring it aligns properly with the latch bolt.

6. Test the Lock

  • Check that the latch engages smoothly when you turn the handle and that the lock mechanism functions correctly with the key. You can also make some small adjustments if needed to get it working.
